The Soviet Union won five consecutive Women’s Basketball World Cups between 1959 and 1975. Nobody has come close since.
Team USA has won four in a row. If the Americans get through Spain on Saturday and then win the gold medal game on Sunday in Berlin, they tie a mark that has stood for 51 years.
The FIBA Women’s World Cup 2026 final is the last piece of a run that began in 2010.
Saturday’s semifinals are not formalities
The Americans face Spain in what is technically a rematch of the 2014 gold medal game, though almost nobody from either roster was there.
Spain won Group A outright, which earned a bye into the quarterfinals, then beat Australia 89-66. Megan DiLeo led them with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Iyana Martín has been the tournament’s steadiest contributor for them at 16.5 points per game.
This is Spain’s return to the semifinals after making three straight from 2010 to 2018. They lost to the United States at this stage in 2010 and finished runner-up in 2014. They have never won it.
In the other semifinal, France plays Germany. That one is the game of the tournament regardless of what happens in the USA vs Spain semifinal.
Germany has already had the best week in its history
The hosts had never reached a Women’s World Cup quarterfinal. They reached one, then beat Belgium, the reigning EuroBasket champions, by 19 points.
Multiple German players described it afterward as the best day their program has ever had. Coach Olaf Lange said he was close to speechless. Six of his players scored in double figures. Leonie Fiebich finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Nyara Sabally added 16 and 12. Marie Gülich has averaged 11.8 points through the tournament and has been the spark for a team that was not supposed to be here.
Now they play France in front of a home crowd in Berlin, in a rematch of the Paris Olympic quarterfinal that France won 84-71. Several German players made clear that the loss still stings two years later.
France is the real threat
The French have made the semifinals for the first time since 1953, the inaugural edition. They had lost their previous six World Cup quarterfinals before beating China this week.
They are also undefeated in Berlin, and they have the deepest collection of WNBA talent outside the American roster with eight current WNBA players. Gabby Williams has been playing some of her best basketball of the tournament. Dominique Malonga, Marine Johannès and Janelle Salaün give them shooting that travels.
Everyone remembers why this matters. In the 2024 Olympic final in Paris, Team USA won 67-66. Williams banked in a shot at the buzzer with her foot on the line, making it a two rather than a three. One point, one shoe, one gold medal.
France has waited two years for a rematch.
Team USA is good but not invincible
The Americans have won every game in Berlin, including a record-breaking quarterfinal performance against Hungary. This is their 13th consecutive top-four finish and 11th straight semifinal appearance, a streak that runs back to when the round was introduced in 1986.
A Team USA fifth straight World Cup title would come without two of the program’s biggest names. A’ja Wilson, the four-time WNBA MVP and reigning Olympic MVP, is not here. Neither is Kelsey Plum. Both withdrew for health reasons, and they are among seven players from the 2024 Olympic roster who are absent, alongside Alyssa Thomas, Brittney Griner, Sabrina Ionescu, Jewell Loyd and the retired Diana Taurasi.
That has forced five returning Olympians to carry more: Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier, Jackie Young, Kahleah Copper and Chelsea Gray. Stewart has a personal milestone in play. A gold on Sunday would give her four World Cup titles in four appearances, tying Sue Bird’s total with a perfect record where Bird went 4-1.
The market has noticed the wobble. American gold odds have drifted from -380 to -360.
Why this tournament has been harder than the last four
The FIBA Women’s World Cup 2026 final will cap a competition that expanded to 16 teams and got noticeably more competitive in the process.
Four extra teams means more group games, a longer path to the medal rounds and more chances for a mid-tier program to build something. Hungary and Italy returned after decades away. Germany reached its first quarterfinal. Belgium arrived as European champion and went out in the last eight.
ESPN’s reporting from Berlin put it plainly: the United States has not looked entirely invincible here, and it has never been more true that the field is closing. Winning five in a row in 1975 and winning five in a row now are not the same achievement.
Caitlin Clark has delivered on the biggest stage she’s had
The Caitlin Clark Berlin debut against China produced 14 points and double-digit assists, the most by any debutant in the competition’s history and the first time an American had reached double figures in assists at a World Cup since Dawn Staley in 1998.
Clark described it afterward as unlike any game she had played, and credited the five gold medalists around her for setting the terms. Paige Bueckers and Angel Reese also made their first World Cup appearances in that game.
The tournament expanded to 16 teams this year, up from 12, and the WNBA paused its season for three weeks to accommodate it. Through 15 games, attendance in Berlin had reached 86,492, an average of 5,766 per game.
What is actually at stake Sunday
The world champion earns direct qualification for the LA28 Olympic tournament. Team USA already has a place as host, so the practical stakes for the Americans are entirely about the record.
For France or Germany, a final would be the biggest result either program has ever produced.
Two games. Fifty-one years. The last time anyone managed this, the tournament was still called the World Championship for Women.
